Having arrived in Costa Rica last night we spent one night in Dubrovnik just grabbing food before
heading out through Montenegro on route to our accommodation in Kosovo.
We hadn’t really expected much from Montenegro from what we had read and hence we were seeing the
day as a long drive day with 3 border crossings. We had originally planned to head into Albania and
then into Kosovo that way but we’d ended up deciding that the extra journey time was not worth the
detour. Also we didn’t expect to see much in Albania as we would have just been taking the major
roads and we had planned to take the scenic route through Montenegro instead.
Not long after entering Montenegro we started to come by beautiful scenery and quiet towns. It was
a welcome surprise and I’d thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting the region to take the drive
through Montenegro. There wasn’t a whole lot to stop at or see, but it was more about the journey
and the endless rolling views. Quite literally stunning and it gave us higher hopes for the rest
of the journey.
For lunch we stopped at a place overlooking a large lake and an island fort. While expensive and the
service terrible it was a much needed and beautiful stop on our first very hot day. It had been around
31°c at the time. Thankfully our car had air conditioning. :)
From here we headed inland towards Kosovo. Kat’s map reading skills lead us to believe that we could
take a “shortcut” …. this turned out to be a scenic long cut over a mountain pass on blind, pot hole
ridden roads. We only meet two cars in about an hour and a half. Eventually we ended up joining the main
road before realising the border crossing we had planned to take was an unmanned illegal crossing. While
we could have smuggled ourselves into Kosovo here we decided not to on local advice particularly because
this border was a hotspot during the war and potentially laden with land mines still. At this point we
had a 2 hour detour in order to reach our hotel for the night in the city of Peja.
Next stop Kosovo ......
