We actually visited Mauritius twice. It made sense to transit through Mauritius on the way
both there and back for logistics and cost. We were meant to transit through on the way
there without leaving the airport but we had a last minute delay to our flight and so we
had to rearrange it to be a day later. No harm done to us. An extra day at a high end hotel
on a nice beach near to the airport. We were supposed to fly with Air Madagascar, but as
we found out the next day they had cancelled our flight again. It would turn out that Air
Madagascar only bother turning up if their planes have enough passengers. In the end they
just delayed us until an Air Mauritius plane was flying which only goes twice per week.
During our time in Mauritius we stayed both in the south and the north. We rented a car to
get around and explored every single beach on the island. Mauritius isn't a large island
but it takes quite a while to navigate on narrow and blind country lanes. The buses are
frequent and oversized meaning that they are slow, constantly stopping and difficult to
overtake. Mauritius was much more rustic than we had imagined. It was also a lot quieter
and at times it was even difficult to be served lunch or dinner when out and about. Even
in the tourist centre only a handful of restaurants existed. Only two of which served lunch.
This was very strange for a holiday island. It did however give a nicer feel to the place,
a much more local vibe. While Mauritius certainly didn't have the best beaches in the world
it was a very nice place to relax after having been in Madagascar and a perfect place for a
stopover.
Mauritius culminated our travel for 2015 and as the year's travel was coming to an end we knew that 2016 was likely to be a much quieter year. We had; have big plans for future travel but given new ventures being undertaken in 2016 its unlikely that we'll manage any big events ...... still as ever watch this space.
