This was to be our second trip to Mexico. We had previously visited Mexico in mid-2007 and so we knew roughly what to expect here even though on our previous
we had been staying in an all-inclusive hotel. With our last visit to Mexico being so long ago, and it being before we (and most other people) owned a digital
camera we were unable to remember exactly what we had and had not done or seen before in Mexico. This ended up in us actually re-visiting the Tulum ruins.
This was not necessarily a bad thing as we were blessed with the opportunity to take new photos with high end digital cameras and the cost of visiting them
again was negligible.
Mexico, what can I say, the land of Corona, Tequila shots and great Mexican food. I would have to say that outside of India and Nepal Mexico offers the best
food that we have had all year. In part this was exaggerated by just how bad the food had been in America and after 5 weeks there just before arriving in Mexico
I think this led to our palates' enjoying the new diet ever so much more. The food in Mexico is oh so fresh and oh so so spicy. Everything is spicy; it is bliss.
Our first stop in Mexico was a familiar one, Cancun. Near the airport and had great beaches as far as we recalled. Cancun was the base of our previous visit in 2007. We knew that we didn't have too much to do in the area except for some cheap shopping and well needed relaxation after our long journey across America and having just got over the flu.
Our next stop was a short 1 hour bus ride down the road to Playa del Carmen. This was another beach destination popular with tourists looking for a cheaper Cancun still near to the airport. It was also our jumping on point for our 30 day tour across Central America. During our time here we chill-laxed enjoying our beach front villa, the beach itself and more Mexican food and shopping. The shopping was desperately needed in order to replace some of our very worn clothing from the beginning of our travels.
At this point we had now joined the tour. Our first stop through Central America was the town of Tulum in Mexico. During our time here we visited the Tulum ruins (again) which were located on the pristine white sands of Tulum Beach. The entire ruins were almost overrun by families of Iguana's. We also travelled to the Gran Cenote. A natural water hole which runs under ground here. The water is cold and offers a refreshing break from high heat of Mexico at this time of year. Inside the Cenote there are many turtles, fish and tunnels which house many bats. All in all they make a very natural and surreal experience.
Our next stop was the country of Belize and the island of Caye Caulker.
