At the border crossing with Bosnia the customs official dressed like a Russian comrade just shouted at us in a dialect that we couldn’t understand despite us clearly not understanding. After quite a while of this going on though he eventually understood that we were tourists and let us pass.
After all this commotion, within only a few minutes of the border we were blessed with some surprisingly awesome views. Thankfully I managed to find a few spots to get off the road and snap these.
During the drive we passed through rural mountain communities and were surprised that the main border crossing with Serbia was only served by a single carriageway winding road. Following google maps kept trying to make us take turn offs with what can only be described as craters in them. So large even a 4x4 would struggle. So instead we ignored it and made our own route. This led us through some remote and glorious old villages on the top of mountain peaks before we eventually came down and almost stumbled upon Sarajevo.
Upon entering Sarajevo we were greeted by chaos. Our hotel was supposed to be in the old town and with parking. However upon arrival we found that the exact strip of the road our hotel was on was closed for roadworks. As a result we ended up driving around the old town for one and a half hours while trying to figure out how to get to it from another direction. This led us to driving down dead end one way streets barely a car wide and having to reverse all the way out. Climbing ascents so steep the car only just made it and descents so steep they led to tyre squeal all while dodging parked cars and occasionally oncoming traffic and trams. To add to this it was 34°C and we were boiling in the car. Literally soaked through in our shorts and the back of my knees where dripping on the carpeted floor. In the end we bailed and found another hotel outside of the old town. How we didn’t just give up and abandon the car I don’t know……
Because of the delays in getting to a hotel we ended up with only a later afternoon / evening in Sarajevo. As it turned out this was more than enough. We managed to see everything we wanted in this time and while a nice city we’d actually seen the best / most of it while looking for our hotel.
Our next stop was Lake Bled, Slovenia and the morning we left was the first time we’d seen rain. Heavy rain at that which made driving a bit more hazardous.
