HONDURAS 2013

Welcome to Honduras!

The journey from Guatemala to Honduras was a long one and involved us switching vans part way due to a problem with the gearbox in the van. Thankfully though we had a private transfer and weren't on chicken buses today. The border crossing took way longer than necessary as is always the case. Our accomodation once we arrived in Copan made up for this though. A bit out of the way and up a very steep hill, but of a decent quality. We really had no idea what to expect from Honduras as it isn't really a place you hear much about and we knew we had a relatively short time in the country.

Copan

During our time in Copan we visited the old buidlings and enjoyed several cocktails in the bars. We also found a small bar / restaurant which had a bootleg cinema upstairs where we watched a film. It was a nice period of relaxing given the intensity of travelling so much in such a short time. We also visit the Copan Hot Springs. This involved an extremely treachourous drive where we almost got stuck several times. Upon arriving at the springs we found that we had the place almost exclusively to our selves. This was great given that we brought with us a bottle of local rum and several beers. We spent the evening enjoying time as the sun set in the myriad of different temperature pools and then when it got too dark we had a barbecue dinner. A very nice entrance into Honduras a place non of us had any expectations of.

Roatan

Our next stop in Honduras we Roatan island. The journey to get here must have been one of the longest during our entire round the world trip. It started out we a 7.5 hour bus ride to La Ceiba with a brief stop on route to grab lunch / supplies. From here we had to get a ferry to the island. This was a huge 300 plus seater catamaran ferry. However this didn't the transfer was smooth sailing. You know you are going to be in trouble when they are giving out knockout drugs for travel sickness prior to departure. It was made especially worse by us arriving in the afternoon when the winds are strongest. Kat knew that she would get travel sick and therefore took one of the pills. That was it for her for the rest of the day. She was high as a kite and passed out not long after we arrived at our hotel. The journey was rough though and even I felt slightly sick at parts. Thankfully standing outside helped and it also allowed me to capture some great shots of a beautiful sunset, something everyone else travelling with us missed.

Boy was it worth the journey though when we arrived. We were very glad that we had 3 full days here to relax. Although we weren't staying on the best beach, or any beach at all for that matter, it wasn't that long a walk into the main town area where the restaurants and shops were. The first day we were here was very busy due to the cruise ships that docked here. Thankfully the cruise people left that evening giving a totally different feel. This also meant we had the best beach on the island largely to ourselves for the rest of our time here. I am always amazed by the change in attitude towards you by the locals when they think you are from a cruise and then the next day when they realise you aren't. The locals are always much more friendly and talkative when the cruises have gone. I guess it is like an invasion when an entire cruise ship descends onto your home.

Unfortunately all good things have to come to an end and as such we had to depart the paradise of Roatan. This meant another long ferry transfer on the rough seas. Thankfully it wasn't as bad this time. We were on our way to country number 22, Nicaragua.
